| Pacific Rower found with Sea-me |
 |
Tuesday 24 June 2003
Mick Dawson, one of that extraordinary and intrepid band of ocean rowers, fitted a Sea-me to his boat to protect himself against the risk of being run down whilst rowing the Pacific. Sadly, after a great start, Mick had to call a halt to his journet because of damage to his rudder. The following is the text of an email he sent to us from Japan.
Dear Peter,
As you are probably aware, sadly my row across the Pacific had to be
stopped when damage to my rudder made it impossible to continue. Obviously I
am very disappointed at the moment, but one bright aspect of events,
interest in Japan has been incredible and there looks a very strong
possibility that sponsorship for a repeat attempt may be forthcoming, I am
determined to go again the trip was building into a great success and has
enormous potential, and my confidence in my own ability to complete the trip
remains undiminished, as always though finance will be the deciding factor.
I will be back in the Uk next week and in due course I will send you
stills and information from the trip. One thing that did come out of the
trip, when I was being recovered by the Japanese coastguard it was thick fog
at night but they were able to pick me up clearly from at least eight miles
away on radar. This confirmed my faith in the sea mee unit, which had
alerted a number of vessels to my presence during the trip encouraging them
to come over and investigate my strange vessel.
Sorry I was not able to deliver the ending that I'd planned on but I hope
to put that right in the not too distant future,
Best wishes,
Mick Dawson
We hope that Mick can get back on the highseas again and wish him all success and the best of fortune.
