Sea-me aquired at 12nm
Saturday 18 August 2001

On 16th August, at 1700 hours, the tanker Rhonestern advised the crew of the yacht Grand Cru, which has Sea-me fitted, that it had acquired the yacht on radar at a range of 12nm. Grand Cru was about 45nm north of Le Havre, on passage from Fecamp to Weymouth. The sea state was 4 to 5 and the wind strength was force 4. Grand Cru was beating into a westerly and Sea-me was visible despite the clutter and despite the fact that the yacht was well heeled.

At the end of the passage crew member Robin Sjoberg, the recently retired Cruising Manager of the Royal Yachting Association, said that this channel crossing was the first he had made in over 40 years sailing when he had not come closer to shipping than he would have liked. The fact that the many ships in the channel could, thanks to Sea-me, acquire Grand Cru on their radar at ranges in the order of 12nm meant that they had plenty of time to decide that the target was a yacht and to make the necessary course correction to avoid her. No near misses and peace of mind - well done Sea-me.
